Diego "El Cholo" Simeone on His Son: "He's Just Another Player"
"I see Giuliano like any other football player. When I decided he should stay with us, it was the same decision as with other players. He can help us. I only think about the team. I don’t think about anything or anyone else, even if he’s my son; I just think about the team," explained the coach.
Diego Pablo Simeone, head coach of Atlético de Madrid, spoke about his son Giuliano, who scored the first goal in the victory over Las Palmas (2-0), emphasizing that "he’s just another player," in the team because his coach made that decision.
"Today, he did what he needed to do. As an Atlético player, he has a responsibility and expectations. He has no name here. He’s just another player. I don’t want to and won’t make a big deal out of it. At Atlético, those who work hard play, and those who don’t, play less. We didn’t go looking for Giuliano. He’s an Atlético de Madrid player. He was already in the academy. The club didn’t buy him to bring him here. He was part of the youth system, and the coach saw potential in him. The coach promoted him to the first team. He’ll have good and bad games," he stated.
Simeone remarked on the game, saying it "reflects well on the team." "It was important to recover from the poor performance we had against Betis. Today was a very good game, with strong performances from Giuliano and Molina, who played spectacularly and has faced a lot of criticism. Also from Javi Galán and the moments Barrios played, bringing us energy and vitality," he commented.
Simeone also addressed the tragedy in Valencia and the tribute held at the Metropolitano this Sunday: "I have no doubt that the Spanish people have responded to a sad situation that will be difficult to overcome. I imagine the support from the fans outside the stadium today with the food drive. The moment of silence and the applause from everyone, straight from the heart, were very moving. Everything that happened was very emotional."
Regarding Griezmann, he acknowledged it wasn’t "his best game." "I think he’s played over 400 games with Atlético. He’s not always going to play well. He will go down in Atlético’s history as a great legend," he said, also praising Barrios. "He still needs to find his scoring touch. Once he does, he’ll soon be in the national team." He also highlighted Lenglet’s dedication. "He’s incredibly enthusiastic. When he wasn’t playing, he showed motivation and a good attitude."
"We’ve put the bad game against Betis behind us. Hopefully, we won’t repeat it. Against Real Sociedad, the team was heavily criticized, but we had a game plan. We played defensively but played well at times. Against Betis, we played without any direction. That shouldn’t happen again," he concluded.
