Vinicius Jr Ratifies Complaint Over Racist Chants in Montjuïc Clásico
Real Madrid's Brazilian forward, Vinicius Jr, reaffirmed his commitment to pursuing legal action against the alleged racist abuse he suffered during the Clásico at Montjuïc in October 2023. Appearing via videoconference from Madrid, the player expressed his determination to continue his fight against racism in football.
Vinicius’ Determined Stance
During his brief statement to the Barcelona magistrate overseeing the investigation, Vinicius reiterated his intent to see the case through. This declaration is crucial for the legal process to advance.
The complaint is based on an investigation by the Mossos d'Esquadra, which identified three FC Barcelona fans—one of them a minor—allegedly responsible for directing racist chants at Vinicius. Stadium footage and a witness's testimony were pivotal in identifying the suspects.
Progress in the Investigation
Judge Carmen García has summoned the two adult suspects for questioning, both of whom have denied the accusations. The investigation is supported by the Barcelona Hate Crimes Prosecutor’s Office, La Liga, and Real Madrid, with Vinicius now formally joining the case as an affected party.
This incident at Montjuïc is one of several episodes involving Vinicius. Earlier in June 2023, three Valencia CF fans were convicted and sentenced to eight months in prison for racist abuse aimed at the player during a match at Mestalla on May 21, 2023.
