Where Will the Next Clásico Between Real Madrid and Barcelona Be Played? LaLiga Considers Moving It Abroad
LaLiga president, Javier Tebas, revealed this Monday that if the highly anticipated Clásico between Barcelona and Real Madrid cannot be held at the Camp Nou or Estadio Olímpico Lluís Companys due to ongoing renovations, the possibility of playing it abroad would be considered, provided both clubs agree.
"We haven't received any official notification that the Clásico can't be played at Barcelona's home. However, if the issue is due to force majeure, like the ongoing works, and both parties agree, we would explore the possibility of playing it outside the stadium," Tebas explained in his comments before the Madrid Sports Press Association (APDM) gala.
Although the Spotify Camp Nou renovation has forced Barcelona to play at the Estadio Olímpico Lluís Companys, the municipal entity managing the stadium has granted permission only until April 30, with the club requesting an extension to continue playing there while work progresses on their main stadium.
"It's an exceptional situation, and in similar cases, we’ve seen games played outside the stadiums under renovation. If needed, it will be evaluated, but it will depend on both clubs’ approval," Tebas emphasized.
The Clásico is scheduled for the 35th round of LaLiga on the weekend of May 10-11, one of the season's most eagerly anticipated dates.
Calendar and Referee Controversies
Tebas also addressed the controversy surrounding match scheduling, particularly the complaints from some clubs. He stated that coordinating match times has become increasingly complex due to European competitions and the Copa del Rey. Despite the complaints, Tebas assured that, while he understands the frustration, the schedules must align with the global calendar.
"Every year there are complaints about the schedules. It's very difficult to find balance when managing both international and local competitions. Although I know some don't understand, sometimes it's the only viable option," said Tebas.
The head of the Spanish competition also addressed the growing controversy over refereeing decisions, which have sparked outrage in some football circles. Specifically, criticism from Realmadrid TV and Barcelona president Joan Laporta has intensified in recent months.
"This isn’t a new issue. We’ve seen similar criticisms for a couple of years. Regarding the complaints, I don’t like the attacks on referees that aren’t based on facts. A change in the refereeing system is necessary, and that’s why, on February 6, we will have a meeting with the clubs and the Technical Refereeing Committee to work on a solution," Tebas remarked.
He also pointed out that last year, LaLiga clubs had already suggested changes to the refereeing system to improve transparency and efficiency in decision-making.
Tebas Supports Mbappé: "He Will Give Us Great Moments of Glory"
Finally, Javier Tebas took the opportunity to back Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappé amid recent criticism. He assured that he has always been a strong supporter of the young forward's talent and that, despite doubts about his future, Mbappé continues to showcase his quality with every match.
"I said from the beginning, when many doubted Mbappé: this player hasn't forgotten how to play football, and as we've seen in recent games, he will continue giving us great moments of glory, both for Real Madrid and for Spanish football," Tebas added, highlighting that the French star remains an undeniable talent.
"Mbappé is a gem of world football, and his impact is felt in every game. Those who criticize him must recognize what he's truly contributing to the game," Tebas concluded, expressing his full support for the player and the bright future he may have in Spain.
