Hansi Flick Avoids Talking About José Mourinho Ahead of Barcelona’s LaLiga Debut

  • Hansi Flick avoided getting into a war of words with José Mourinho and Real Madrid ahead of Barcelona’s LaLiga debut. The German coach made it clear that his priority is the clash against Elche.

Flick Does Not Want to Talk About Mourinho Ahead of Debut

Hansi Flick is clear about where his attention lies before Barcelona officially begins its LaLiga campaign. The German coach avoided commenting on José Mourinho and his arrival at Real Madrid.

During the press conference ahead of Sunday’s clash against Elche, Flick was asked about the new project at the Madrid club and the Portuguese coach’s appointment. The Barcelona manager’s response was direct and left little room for controversy.

"Are we playing Real Madrid tomorrow? No? Then I ask you to ask me about Elche," Flick replied.

Barcelona’s LaLiga debut comes after its match against Athletic Club was postponed, meaning the clash with Elche will be the team’s first official match of the new season.

Elche, Flick’s Only Concern

Flick insisted that Barcelona needs to remain fully focused on its first opponent. Elche will be playing its second match of the season, while this will be the Catalan side’s first game in the competition.

The German coach does not expect an easy match and warned that his team will need to show its best from the opening whistle. "We will need to give 100% of our level," he explained during the press conference.

Although Mourinho’s arrival at Real Madrid promises to add even more tension to the clashes between the two Spanish giants, Flick prefers to keep that discussion out of his dressing room. Barcelona is not playing Real Madrid yet, and Flick is determined not to let the conversation drift away from Elche.

Flick Will Have to Manage His Players

The coach also discussed the fitness of several players who recently featured in the Joan Gamper Trophy, where Barcelona faced Egyptian side Al Ahly.

Flick acknowledged that he will need to manage the minutes of those who played the full 90 minutes in that match. The decision could lead to changes to the lineup against Elche, especially with the team just beginning a demanding season.

"It is normal that the players who played 90 minutes don't play. We have to manage it," the coach explained.

Flick will have to find the right balance between starting the campaign strongly and avoiding overloading players who are still building up their competitive rhythm.

Rodri Impresses Flick in His First Days

Likewise, Flick was pleased with Rodri’s first training sessions and particularly highlighted the midfielder’s personal qualities.

"I am very happy to have him with us. He is a great player and a leader, as well as having a very special personality," the coach said.

The German manager also explained that the player has already worked on the training pitch, a positive sign as he begins adapting to the squad and the demands of the Barcelona setup.
