Mourinho Played a Role in Vinicius' Decision

Vinicius Jr.'s contract renewal finally brought an end to one of the biggest storylines surrounding Real Madrid in recent months. The Brazilian recently extended his deal through 2032 after speculation over his future raised the possibility of a departure from the Santiago Bernabéu.

Mikel Arteta's Arsenal were among the clubs heavily linked with the forward, but Vinicius ultimately decided to remain with the team he joined from Flamengo in 2018 and where he developed into one of the biggest stars in world football.

José Mourinho also played a part in that decision. During an interview with El Chiringuito, the new Real Madrid manager revealed that he personally spoke to Vinicius and offered him a clear piece of advice while uncertainty still surrounded his future.

"Don't Leave, It's Not Worth It"

"Obviously I spoke to him, but Vinicius has fallen in love with Real Madrid," Mourinho explained before revealing what he told the Brazilian star.

"The only thing I told him was: 'Vini, where do you want to go? You've only been in Brazil and you only know Real Madrid. When you leave, you realize what Real Madrid is. Don't leave, it's not worth it,'" the Portuguese coach recalled.

Mourinho also believes the team's development and the work being done under his new coaching staff helped convince Vinicius that remaining in Madrid was the right decision for his career.

Mourinho Is Delighted With Vinicius

The Portuguese manager did not hide his satisfaction at having one of Real Madrid's biggest stars at his disposal, particularly praising the intensity Vinicius displays in training.

"He's another machine who is a pleasure to watch work. We have a lot of quality," Mourinho said when discussing the Brazilian and the talent currently available within his squad.

Vinicius' new contract through 2032 ensures Real Madrid will retain one of the cornerstones of its long-term project and gives Mourinho the opportunity to build his attack around a player who already understands the demands of the Santiago Bernabéu.

Mourinho Comes to Vinicius' Defense

Mourinho was also asked whether Vinicius needs to change his behavior on the pitch, but the former Chelsea and Inter manager shifted the focus of the discussion.

The Portuguese coach argued that opponents and referees also have a responsibility to treat Vinicius exactly like any other player, regardless of the controversies that have surrounded him throughout his career.

"People have to look beyond whether he's more or less likable. On the pitch, you have to look at Vinicius like any other player. He's better than the others," Mourinho concluded, making it clear that he is prepared to publicly defend one of the biggest stars of his new Real Madrid.
