LaLiga 2026/27 begins on August 15, but two of its biggest attractions will be missing from the opening weekend. Real Madrid and FC Barcelona will both start their seasons later, even though their respective games against Real Sociedad and Athletic Club officially remain part of Matchday 1.

The explanation is not a suspension or a sporting sanction. It is a calendar adjustment created after the 2026 World Cup, which finished less than a month before the Spanish league was scheduled to begin.

A special measure after the World Cup

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) established that teams with a significant number of players involved in the World Cup semifinals or final could postpone their opening league match until August 25, 26 or 27. The measure was designed to provide additional recovery time following an unusually demanding summer.

Both Barcelona and Real Madrid met that condition.

Barcelona had 10 players involved in the World Cup semifinals, according to the club, while Real Madrid also had members of its squad still competing during the latter stages of the tournament. That made both eligible for a delayed Matchday 1.

When will Real Madrid play Matchday 1?

Real Madrid’s scheduled opener against Real Sociedad was moved to Wednesday, August 26 at the Santiago Bernabéu.

However, that will not actually be José Mourinho’s first LaLiga match since returning to Madrid. The club will debut four days earlier, on August 22, away against Espanyol, a fixture belonging to Matchday 2.

That creates the unusual situation of Real Madrid playing its second-round fixture before completing Matchday 1.

When will Barcelona play Matchday 1?

The same situation applies to Barcelona. Its opening-round home match against Athletic Club was rescheduled for Thursday, August 27 at the Spotify Camp Nou.

But Hansi Flick’s defending champion will actually begin its season on August 23 away against Elche CF, also in Matchday 2. Four days later, Barça will return home to finally complete its first-round assignment against Athletic.

So are Madrid and Barcelona skipping Matchday 1?

No. That is the key distinction.

Real Madrid and Barcelona are still playing their official Matchday 1 games; those fixtures have simply been moved later in August. LaLiga’s first round therefore stretches from August 15, when Deportivo Alavés faces Getafe CF, all the way to August 27.

It is an unusual start created by an unusual soccer calendar. After the expanded World Cup, Spain’s two biggest clubs received extra recovery time — and LaLiga’s opening round will take almost two weeks to fully complete.
