Is Messi Returning to Europe? Cesc Fàbregas Fuels the Rumors From Italy
Rumors about a possible return of Lionel Messi to European football have intensified after recent comments by Como 1907 head coach Cesc Fàbregas. During a press conference ahead of the Como Cup, the former Barcelona player didn’t rule out the possibility of reuniting with the Argentine star, although he clarified that Messi is currently in the United States playing for Inter Miami.
What sparked the speculation was the presence of Antonela Roccuzzo, Messi’s wife, at the Giuseppe Sinigaglia Stadium during a friendly match between Como and Lille. She was accompanied by her children and Fàbregas' kids, in what seemed to be a family visit. The close relationship between the two families fueled questions about whether this was more than a social visit.
“Leo was at my house on vacation. He came to visit some friends. We’re friends, as are our wives and kids. But he’s in the United States,” said Fàbregas. However, his phrase “never say never” was enough to spark speculation among fans, especially knowing that Messi’s contract with Inter Miami ends this December.
A Club with Big Ambitions and Major Signings
Como 1907, newly promoted to Serie A, has been one of the most ambitious clubs in the Italian transfer market, investing over 100 million euros to strengthen its squad. Among their targets is striker Álvaro Morata, who may leave Galatasaray, although Fàbregas refused to confirm the move: “We’ll see, I don’t like talking about things that aren’t 100% done.”
Signing Messi may seem far-fetched, but not impossible—especially in a context where the club is looking to become a rising force in Italian football. Although Messi himself has not expressed a desire to leave MLS, his friendship with Fàbregas and the recent family gathering keep the door slightly open for a surprising twist.
Meanwhile, Lionel Messi remains focused on his season with Inter Miami, competing in the Leagues Cup and continuing to be a key figure. But in football, as Fàbregas said, nothing is ever off the table. Could Italy be the next stop for the World Cup winner? For now, the dream lives on.
