Minnesota United v CF Montreal: Ramsay confident goals will come
Minnesota United and CF Montreal are both looking for their first wins of the MLS season when they meet at Allianz Field.
Minnesota United head coach Eric Ramsay is not worried after drawing a blank in their MLS opener and expects them to get goals against CF Montreal on Saturday.
The Loons lost 1-0 to Los Angeles FC last weekend; despite having 12 shots, they only managed one on target, through Kelvin Yeboah. It leaves them as one of six teams on 0 points in the Western Conference.
They also failed to score in their final preseason match against New York City FC, but having also recorded a 6-0 victory over Sporting Kansas City prior to that, Ramsay is confident his team will show a goal threat.
"I do feel [goals] will come, and I don't think we're a team that will lack goals over the course of the year," Ramsay said.
"We broke the goals record in the league last year and I don't think that's going to be a thing that come 34 games time, we're looking back being really concerned, I hope, because we've got players in the group that are capable in front of the goal.
"We've got a lot of variety in the front line, and it's only a matter of time. I'm trusting goals will come as that's the nature of the group we've got."
Montreal also suffered defeat in their first game of the season, falling to a late goal in their 3-2 loss to Atlanta United.
This will be the second road game in a run of seven to start the season for Montreal, but defender Tom Pearce believes the unity and competitiveness within the group will propel them forward.
"This year, we've come together closer and set ourselves goals within the squad. Everyone's working hard and hopefully, it's a good season," Pearce said.
"Everyone's fighting for their own position. Whether I'm fighting with someone else who comes in or one of the younger lads, I'm going to keep going for it and I'm looking forward to it."
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Minnesota United – Kelvin Yeboah
Yeboah attempted six of Minnesota United’s 12 shots on Saturday against LAFC.
He has attempted 37 shots in 10 regular-season matches since debuting with the Loons last August, with only Gabriel Pec (44) and Evander (38) have taken more since Yeboah’s MLS debut.
CF Montreal – Prince Owusu
Prince Owusu was involved in both of Montreal’s goals against Atlanta United on Saturday, scoring one and assisting the other.
Owusu is the first player in Montreal’s MLS history to record a goal and an assist on his regular-season debut for the club.
MATCH PREDICTION: MINNESOTA UNITED WIN
Minnesota United have won three of their four all-time meetings with CF Montreal (L1), though the last match was a 4-0 home win for Montreal in June 2023. The only previous meeting between the sides in Minnesota was a 2-0 Loons win in May 2018.
Minnesota opened their season with a 1-0 loss at LAFC on Saturday. The Loons had started unbeaten through four games in each of the last three seasons (W2 D2 in 2022, W2 D2 in 2023, W3 D1 in 2024).
In the 2022 regular season, CF Montreal set an MLS record (since tied) with 11 away wins. In the two-plus seasons since, Montreal has totaled just five wins in 35 away matches (D7 L23).
