Darwin Núñez Equals Historic Forlán Record After Winning the Premier League with Liverpool
Darwin Núñez made history this Sunday by becoming a Premier League champion with Liverpool for the 2024/25 season, matching the achievement of Diego Forlán, who had been the only Uruguayan to win the English league title (with Manchester United in 2003).
The striker played the final seven minutes of Liverpool’s emphatic 5-1 victory over Tottenham at Anfield, coming on as a substitute for Alexis Mac Allister. Although Núñez had a modest season in front of goal — scoring only five Premier League goals — he now adds one of football’s most prestigious trophies to his resume.
A New Era Begins at Liverpool
Under the leadership of Arne Slot, Liverpool successfully navigated a period of transition following the departure of legendary coach Jürgen Klopp, who left an indelible legacy with the 2019/20 Premier League and the 2018/19 Champions League titles.
Despite initial skepticism surrounding the new project, Slot quickly instilled his style of play, guiding Liverpool to a near-flawless league campaign. In 34 rounds, only Nottingham Forest and Fulham managed to defeat the Reds. With the title now secured, Arsenal, currently second, no longer has a mathematical chance of catching them.
Darwin Núñez: Between History and Promise
While Núñez’s goal tally this season fell short compared to the previous year (where he scored 14 Premier League goals), this historic accomplishment cements his place in modern Uruguayan football lore.
By joining Forlán in the exclusive club of Uruguayans crowned champions in England, Darwin Núñez confirms his growing influence — blending the weight of history with the promise of greater achievements to come.
