Rúben Amorim Arrives with a Firm Hand to Revolutionize Manchester United
Newly appointed during the last international break, Portuguese coach Rúben Amorim is determined to implement his style to transform Manchester United and unlock the team’s full potential, especially in attack. Without magic tricks or illusions of instant changes, Amorim describes himself as a pragmatic and passionate coach with clear ideas on how he wants his team to play and the methods to achieve it.
Amorim has been upfront about his need for time to develop his project, similar to his experience at Sporting Lisbon in 2020. "I know that with so many matches and so little time to train, it will be difficult for me, but even harder for them because they’ll be on the pitch and they’ll suffer a bit," he said during a press conference ahead of the match against Bodø/Glimt, leaders of the Norwegian league.
Rebuilding offensive confidence
The attack of the Red Devils has been one of the coach’s main concerns, as the team has only scored 13 goals in 12 Premier League matches and 7 in 4 Europa League games. "It’s a problem, but we need to improve as a team. We have quality players who can score plenty of goals," he remarked. Amorim has identified key areas for improvement, including the position of Marcus Rashford, whom he plans to reposition to better utilize his skills.
The coach also trusts players like Bruno Fernandes, Rasmus Højlund, Alejandro Garnacho, and Antony, but he holds high expectations for Rashford, who has only scored 5 goals this season, far from his impressive 2022-2023 campaign with 30 goals. "I’ll try to convince him that this isn’t his best position, and we’ll work on finding the right solution for him. We need Marcus to regain his confidence," Amorim added.
A tough but achievable challenge
Amorim faces the challenge of implementing changes mid-season, something he acknowledges as difficult but achievable due to the quality of United’s players. "It’s a different league, more challenging than Portugal, but here I have more experienced players. They just need to regain confidence," he stated. Against Bodø/Glimt, Amorim expects a convincing team performance in what promises to be a highly intense match.
