Tottenham Rallies and Sinks Aston Villa
Dominic Solanke’s goal five minutes into the second half crushed Aston Villa's hopes in London. After being knocked out of the League Cup last Wednesday, Unai Emery's side suffered another setback that distances them from the Premier League’s top spots, led by Liverpool.
Aston Villa, coming into this tenth matchday with a seven-game unbeaten run and only one loss this season against Arsenal, took the lead half an hour in. A corner from Lucas Digne was flicked on by Ezri Konsa and tapped in by Morgan Rogers to make it 1-0.
However, Tottenham quickly leveled in the second half with a header from Brennan Johnson off a cross by Heung Min Son. Villa’s errors soon proved costly. In the 75th minute, a midfield turnover was taken advantage of by Kulusevski, whose cross was headed in by Solanke to make it 2-1. Four minutes later, another error by Pau Torres allowed Pape Sarr to find Richarlison, who set up Solanke for the 3-1.
In stoppage time, James Maddison sealed the rout, lifting Tottenham to seventh place, just two points behind Aston Villa, who remain in the European spots.
