Pereira keen to keep increasing Wolves' level
Wolves are looking to get back to winning ways in the Premier League, but face a tough test as they travel to high-flying Newcastle United.
Vitor Pereira wants Wolves to continue to increase their level as they prepare for a trip to Newcastle United in the Premier League.
Wolves are currently 17th in the table, sitting just above the relegation zone due to a superior goal difference.
They suffered their first defeat under Pereira last time out in the Premier League, a 3-0 defeat to high-flying Nottingham Forest, after going unbeaten in his first three games (W2 D1).
However, they bounced back by beating Bristol City 2-1 in the FA Cup on Saturday, and Pereira is hoping to build on that performance to get them back to winning ways in the league.
"We know that we can play at a better level for 90 minutes," he said of the FA Cup game.
"It's important to have some days to be more consistent in the game. If we play the second half like we played the first half, I'm very happy. I think we can increase our level.
"We work it, we fight it, we suffer together, defending together, compact, and this is football. It's not easy."
Newcastle, meanwhile, have moved up to fifth after a five-match winning streak in the Premier League.
Overall, they have won each of their last eight in all competitions, having seen off Arsenal in the EFL Cup semi-final first leg last Tuesday before knocking Bromley out of the FA Cup.
However, Eddie Howe has some injury concerns after their latest win, with some key players facing a race to be fit in time for Wednesday's game.
"Anthony [Gordon's substitution on Sunday] was forced. Harvey [Barnes] felt something in his quad. The plan was always to play Joe [Joelinton] and Bruno [Guimaraes] for 45 [minutes] each," Howe told BBC Sport.
"Joe [Willock] just felt something in training yesterday. I think it is a muscular problem. I don't think it's serious, but it was enough for us not to take the risk with him."
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Newcastle United – Alexander Isak
Having scored in his last seven Premier League matches, Alexander Isak is looking to become the fourth different player to net in 8+ successive appearances in the competition, after Jamie Vardy (twice for Leicester City), Ruud van Nistelrooy (twice for Manchester United), and Daniel Sturridge (for Liverpool).
Wolves – Matheus Cunha
Among forwards, only Antoine Semenyo (177) and Jeremy Doku (174) have made more progressive ball carries than Matheus Cunha (164) in the Premier League this season, with the Brazilian's total progressive carry distance of 2,174m the most of any forward in the division this term.
MATCH PREDICTION: NEWCASTLE UNITED WIN
Newcastle have won four of their last six Premier League games against Wolves (67%), having won just two of their first 13 against them in the competition (15%).
In fact, following their 2-1 win at Molineux in September, Newcastle are looking to complete their first league double over Wolves since 1905-06.
Newcastle have won each of their last five Premier League games, as many as their opening 15 league matches of the campaign (W5 D5 L5). The Magpies last won six successive matches in the competition in December 2022.
Meanwhile, Wolves have lost each of their last three Premier League away games against Newcastle and have never kept a clean sheet in nine visits to St James' Park in the competition.
Wolves have won just two of their last 16 away games in the Premier League (D5 L9), with both of those coming by a three-goal margin (4-1 v Fulham in November, 3-0 v Leicester in December).
