Earthquake at Beşiktaş: they fire their president!
Beşiktaş of Turkey announced on Wednesday the replacement of the club's president, Hasan Arat, who has been in office for a year, with the current vice president, Hüseyin Yücel.
"The Board of Directors of Beşiktaş, in its meeting on November 27, has decided to appoint Hüseyin Yücel as president," states a brief club statement.
Yesterday, two senior officials of the club, General Coordinator Samet Aybaba, a former Beşiktaş player, and former U.S. goalkeeper Brad Friedel, who was an advisor to the club's management, announced their resignation.
Vice President Onur Göçmez also announced his resignation today, but according to a statement from the club, the Board did not accept it, persuaded him to stay, and shortly afterward decided to replace President Hasan Arat, a businessman and former basketball player who was elected with a large majority last December.
The 2023-2024 season has been one of the worst in Beşiktaş's history, finishing in sixth place in the Turkish Süper Lig, 46 points behind the leader, Galatasaray, a result only partially mitigated by their 5-0 victory over the same team to win the Super Cup in August.
After three losses and a draw in the last four matches of the current Süper Lig, Beşiktaş has fallen back to sixth place.
