On September 22, 2013, one of Turkish football's most infamous nights unfolded at Istanbul's Atatürk Olympic Stadium, where a Süper Lig derby between Beşiktaş and Galatasaray descended into full-scale chaos. With Galatasaray leading 2–1 — courtesy of a Didier Drogba brace — a brutal two-footed tackle by Felipe Melo earned him a red card, but it was his taunting response to the Beşiktaş faithful, ripping off his shirt and waving it in their direction, that lit the fuse.

Hundreds of Beşiktaş supporters stormed the pitch in a wave of fury, hurling plastic chairs and clashing with riot police in front of a crowd of over 76,000. The match was abandoned entirely.
