Girona Aim to Surprise in New Champions League
Girona president Pere Guardiola expressed his approval of the new Champions League format, "with more matches and different teams," where his team will make its debut this season and aim to maintain "the high level they reached last season."
"It will be challenging for us, but so far, we've played very good football. Last year, we performed at a very high level. We'll try to maintain that level this year," he said after learning that his team will host Liverpool (ENG), Arsenal (ENG), Feyenoord (NED), and Slovan Bratislava (SVK) at Montilivi, and will play away against PSG (FRA), Milan (ITA), PSV (NED), and Sturm Graz (AUT).
Regarding the format with 36 clubs and a league-style competition with eight matches for each club, Guardiola noted that it "provides more opportunities in terms of competition to see more matches and different teams" and that it is "much better" for spectators.
"I think this format will work because there’s a league, more matches, and in the end, it's more attractive for the spectators. I imagine they'll keep adapting it. Today we have this, it's the first year, and we're new to this whole thing," he added.
