Simeone Focused Solely on Winning with Atlético in the Champions League
Diego Simeone, manager of Atlético Madrid, emphasized the demanding nature of the Champions League, stating it "always pushes you to win" in its new format. Speaking ahead of Tuesday’s clash against Sparta Prague, he acknowledged their strong start to the competition and the “high tempo” they bring to their games.
"The results we’re seeing across all matches suggest that this format requires an extra level of focus from everyone. As we get further along and this first experience comes to an end, we’ll likely have a clearer view of its impact. But it’s a format that demands winning, even though that was always the case," Simeone remarked.
"Now we’re all playing against everyone, and it’s not been easy for any team," he continued, stressing the need to win while warning about the tough opponent awaiting them: "In the Champions League, they’re strong, especially at home, and they maintain a high tempo. The key will be to take the game where we believe we can hurt them while controlling their intensity."
Grateful for the praise from Sparta Prague coach Lars Friis, Simeone reflected on his long tenure with Atlético, saying, "It’s been many years of hard work." He highlighted the importance of starting strong in matches, particularly against home teams who thrive off the energy of their fans. "It’s logical—they’re backed by their crowd," he added.
Simeone stressed the need to adapt to the expected intensity at the start of Tuesday’s game, noting that Sparta Prague will likely press hard from the opening whistle. When asked about his recent social media post celebrating 700 matches in charge of Atlético, Simeone said, "It was just about expressing what I envisioned, what excited and inspired me. Everything that has happened, is happening, and hopefully will keep happening, always with a focus on taking it one match at a time."
Having debuted as Atlético’s manager on January 7, 2012, Simeone remains committed to the club, with his contract running until June 30, 2027.
