Germany Searches for Its First Win Under Klopp

The Jürgen Klopp era with Germany is still waiting for its first victory. After drawing 1-1 with the Netherlands in Amsterdam, Die Mannschaft suffered a major setback with a 1-0 defeat against Greece in Augsburg, leaving the team with just one point from its opening two matches in Group A2.

Now comes another opportunity. Germany hosts Serbia at the Allianz Arena in Munich in a match that could prove important as the team looks to avoid losing further ground this early in one of the most demanding groups in the UEFA Nations League.

Klopp acknowledged after the defeat to the Greeks that his team still needs time to find its identity. Dominating possession was not enough against Greece, which capitalized on a defensive mistake through Dimitris Kourbelis to secure a historic victory on German soil.

Klopp Completely Revamps Germany

The match will also mark the beginning of an unusual approach from Klopp. From his first squad announcement, the coach decided to split this international window into two groups, calling up a total of 44 players for Germany's four matches. The second group was assembled specifically for the games against Serbia and Greece.

As a result, the team that takes the field in Munich will look very different from the one used during the opening two matches. The idea is to expand the national team's options and evaluate new players as Germany begins its new cycle following the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Among the new faces will be Jonas Urbig, who will have an opportunity to defend the German goal against Serbia.

Germany will also be without an important player in defense. Nico Schlotterbeck suffered ligament damage in his right ankle during the team's final training session and has been ruled out of both this match and Sunday's trip to face Greece.

Players such as Kai Havertz, who suffered a muscular injury during the draw against the Netherlands, and Jamal Musiala, who also previously left the national team camp, are unavailable as well.

Serbia Looks to Take Advantage of Germany's Struggles

Serbia also enters the match with little room for error after its opening two games. The Balkan side lost both of its first two Group A2 matches, first against Greece and then 2-1 against the Netherlands.

Against the Oranje, Serbia struggled particularly against Mexx Meerdink, who scored both Dutch goals. That result left the Serbians needing to start collecting points if they want to remain in contention in the group.

The stage is therefore set for two teams in need of a response. Germany is searching for its first victory of the Klopp era, while Serbia will attempt to collect its first points of this edition of the UEFA Nations League.
