Injuries have once again crossed paths with Nico Schlotterbeck. The Borussia Dortmund defender was forced to leave the Germany camp after injuring his right ankle during the team’s final training session under Jürgen Klopp in Herzogenaurach.
The problem occurred during an exercise before training. Schlotterbeck lost control of the ball during a slalom drill and moved into the area where Finn Jeltsch was working. During the sequence, the center back planted his foot awkwardly and twisted his right ankle, requiring medical attention and preventing him from continuing normally. He later underwent an MRI to determine the extent of the injury.
Tests confirmed an injury to the lateral ligament in his right ankle. The good news for Schlotterbeck and Borussia Dortmund is that surgery will not be necessary, although the defender will return to Dortmund to begin his recovery.
Germany Loses a Key Player for the Nations League
The injury rules Schlotterbeck out of Germany’s next two UEFA Nations League matches: the game against Serbia in Munich and the trip to face Greece in Thessaloniki. His absence also represents another setback for Jürgen Klopp, who had included the center back among the players remaining with the second group of call-ups during this international window.
The situation is particularly concerning given the defender’s recent injury history. During the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Schlotterbeck suffered a significant injury to his left ankle that required surgery and kept him sidelined for several months. This time, the problem affects his right ankle, and initial tests point to a less serious scenario.
Attention will now also turn to Borussia Dortmund. His availability for the club’s next Bundesliga match against Werder Bremen, scheduled for October 9, remains uncertain and will depend on his recovery over the coming days.
