WAFCON 2026 reaches its penultimate chapter with a special clash between two North African neighbors. Morocco and Algeria meet this Saturday at the Rabat Olympic Stadium in the third-place playoff after both teams fell just short of reaching the final.

For the hosts, this will be an opportunity to close another strong continental campaign by reaching the podium in front of their home crowd. For Algeria, the match is already historic: regardless of the result, this will be their best-ever finish at a Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Morocco Want to Finish With a Victory at Home

Morocco came extremely close to reaching a third consecutive final, but Cameroon ended the hosts’ dream.

The Atlas Lionesses played out a 0-0 draw in the semifinals and controlled much of the match, finishing with 64% possession and 566 attempted passes. However, they were unable to find the breakthrough and eventually lost 3-1 in the penalty shootout.

Now there is one final objective.

A victory would see Morocco finish among Africa’s top three teams for a third consecutive edition after finishing as runners-up in 2022 and 2024. It would also continue a remarkable trend: finishing on the podium in every WAFCON tournament hosted on Moroccan soil.

There is also a very recent result that should give them confidence.

Morocco Have Already Beaten Algeria at This WAFCON

This will be the second meeting between the two national teams during the tournament.

Morocco and Algeria already faced each other in the group stage, with the hosts earning a narrow 1-0 victory thanks to Sanaa Mssoudy’s goal in the 84th minute.

This time, the circumstances will be completely different.

There are no points at stake and no opportunity to recover in another match. This time, a place on the podium is on the line.

It will also be the first time in WAFCON history that two North African national teams face each other in a medal match. Never before have two teams from the same region contested the third-place playoff.

Algeria Have Already Made History, but Want More

Algeria enter the match after suffering a 3-1 semifinal defeat against Malawi.

The match became complicated very early when Morgane Belkhiter was sent off in the 22nd minute, becoming the first Algerian player in the history of the competition to receive a red card.

Despite playing with 10, Algeria still managed to create danger and finished the match with nine shots on target.

Ikram Adjabi scored Algeria’s only goal and was one of their most dangerous players, registering four shots on target.

Now Algeria will look to close their historic campaign by accomplishing something they have never done before: defeat and score against another North African team at WAFCON.

They previously drew 0-0 against Tunisia in 2024 before losing 1-0 to Morocco in the current edition.

A North African Derby for the Podium

The match will feature several special storylines.

It will be only the second Morocco-Algeria meeting in WAFCON history, with both encounters taking place during this edition of the tournament.

Morocco will look to take advantage of playing at home once again and finish a difficult tournament with a medal. Algeria, meanwhile, will try to turn the best WAFCON campaign in their history into their first third-place finish.

The winner will also become the eighth different nation to finish third in WAFCON history, joining Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, DR Congo, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa and Zambia.

Two neighbors.
