In 2016, Monique Ngock was just 12 years old when she watched Cameroon host Nigeria in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations final.

That night ended in a 1-0 defeat following a late goal from Desire Oparanozie. For Ngock, however, it meant much more than losing a match: that experience became deeply connected to her own struggle to carve out a path in football.

Now, a decade later, the Cameroonian midfielder finds herself on the other side of the screen, emerging as one of the key figures in a team that has once again moved within one step of the continental title.

A defeat that became motivation

The loss to Nigeria was especially painful for a young girl who, at the time, did not have the support she needed from her own family to pursue her passion for football.

As Ngock explained, she hoped a title for the Indomitable Lionesses would help prove that women could also achieve great things in the sport. When Cameroon lost, she felt her own path would become even more difficult.

However, that frustration also inspired a promise: if she ever had the opportunity to play in a final with her national team, she would do everything possible to bring the trophy home to Cameroon.

A key figure in an extraordinary journey

The Indomitable Lionesses defeated Ghana 1-0 in the group stage, becoming the first team to secure qualification for the knockout rounds on Matchday 2.

Then came one of the tournament’s biggest results: a historic 1-0 victory over Nigeria in the quarterfinals.

In the semifinals, Cameroon eliminated hosts Morocco 3-1 in a penalty shootout after a 0-0 draw, also recording their first victory over a host nation in seven attempts in the competition.

A mission that goes far beyond the trophy

For Ngock, the impact of this generation goes beyond the results achieved during the tournament.

Her own childhood experience has made her aware of the influence the current players can have on young Cameroonian girls who dream of pursuing football.

The midfielder believes the national team is building an image that can serve as an inspiration for a new generation, particularly for young girls who still face obstacles in pursuing that path.

And the girl who cried in front of the television in 2016 will finally have the opportunity she imagined for years.

Monique Ngock will play in the WAFCON 2026 final with Cameroon against Malawi, with the chance to turn an old promise into the first continental title in the history of the Indomitable Lionesses.
