How Much Will Tua Tagovailoa Earn if He Retires?
Tua Tagovailoa took a brutal hit from Damar Hamlin during Thursday Night Football, forcing him to leave the field and raising concerns about the health of the player, who has now suffered his third concussion in two years.
With this in mind, discussions have started about the future of the Hawaiian quarterback, especially considering the long-term effects these kinds of injuries could have on his personal life. His first concussion occurred in 2022 during a game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
After physically recovering from that injury, he suffered another concussion later that season in a game against the Green Bay Packers.
Now, some are questioning whether retirement might be the best option for Tua, a choice that could bring him financial security, but at the cost of ending his NFL career. This point was raised by sports journalist Nick Wright on "X." Tagovailoa earns an annual salary of approximately $93 million, with a contract running through 2025.
If he were to retire from professional sports, he could receive around $167 million in compensation.
Additionally, if Tua decides to retire, he would also have access to a special insurance plan for athletes and a Health Reimbursement Account plan, potentially saving him up to $450,000.
The Dolphins Seek a Replacement for Tua
Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel has announced that the team is looking to bring in another quarterback to replace Tagovailoa.
"I don’t see how Tua plays the next game. We will bring someone in, we are just weighing the pros and cons of different options. For now, Skylar Thompson is still next in line to play," McDaniel said.
The head coach also expressed concern for Tua as a person beyond just his physical recovery.
"I don't think it's appropriate to talk about what should happen with his career. I think it's fair that his career decisions are his to make. I understand people want to get to that point, but I just hope people listen to what I’m saying: talking about his future isn't what’s best for him due to the anxiety it could cause," McDaniel emphasized.
