Latest Update on Gregg Popovich: Will He Return to the San Antonio Spurs?
Legendary head coach Gregg Popovich will not be returning to lead the San Antonio Spurs this season as he continues recovering from the stroke he suffered in November. According to ESPN, citing NBA sources, there is still no clarity on whether the 75-year-old coach will be able to return to the sidelines in the future.
On November 2, just before a game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Popovich suffered the stroke that forced him to step away indefinitely. Since then, Mitch Johnson has taken over as the Spurs' interim head coach.
An Unmatched NBA Legacy
Widely regarded as one of the greatest coaches in basketball history, Popovich has been the face of success and consistency for the Spurs since the 1996-97 season. Under his leadership, the franchise won five NBA championships (1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2014), shaping a golden era alongside legends like Tim Duncan, David Robinson, Kawhi Leonard, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginóbili.
Last season, Popovich took on the challenge of developing Victor Wembanyama, the rising French superstar. However, Wembanyama is also currently sidelined due to a thrombosis in his right shoulder. While Popovich's future remains uncertain, his legacy in the NBA and with the San Antonio Spurs is already cemented as one of the greatest of all time.
