Canada's F1 Grand Prix Shifts to May Starting 2026
The Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix, traditionally held in June, will move to the third or fourth weekend of May starting from 2026. This change is part of a new regulation aimed at creating a more sustainable schedule and unifying the European tour.
Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1, expressed gratitude towards the promoter and praised the efforts of all involved for accelerating the event's rescheduling. "The change will make our calendar not only more sustainable but also logistically more sensible for our teams and personnel," Domenicali stated in a release from the competition.
"Our commitment to achieving zero emissions by 2030 remains a priority for us as a sport, and thanks to changes like this, we are on track to reach it," added Domenicali. The modification follows the recent change in the Monaco Grand Prix's date to the first weekend of June starting in 2026.
The shift aims to consolidate the European leg of the season into a consecutive period during the European summer months and is expected to eliminate an additional transatlantic crossing for the Formula 1 community each year, significantly reducing carbon emissions.
The announcement builds on adjustments F1 has already made to streamline the calendar in recent years. The Japanese Grand Prix has been moved to spring to align with races in the Asia-Pacific region, Azerbaijan has shifted to autumn as the Championship moves east towards Singapore, and Qatar has been adjusted to align closely with Abu Dhabi at the end of the season.
As previously announced, the Monaco Grand Prix will now be held on the first full weekend of June each year starting from 2026.
All future schedules for the competition are subject to confirmation by the World Motor Sport Council of the International Automobile Federation (FIA).
