Javier Tebas Clashes with Florentino Pérez: A Tense Exchange Between La Liga and Real Madrid
Javier Tebas, the president of La Liga, has responded sharply to Real Madrid's president Florentino Pérez, following remarks Pérez made during the club's member assembly this Sunday about the lack of transparency in payments made by the league to media outlets and clubs.
Tebas retorted on his X profile with the phrase, "Set a thief to catch a thief," highlighting the irony in Pérez's accusations given his own history of using influence over media directors. Tebas referred to several instances documented by journalists like David Jiménez in his book "El Director" and discussions in interviews such as with Jordi Wild on The Wild Project.
Further, Tebas challenged the claim that La Liga's agreement with CVC and the proposed amendments to the Sports Law (Law 39/2022, of December 30th) amounted to an "expropriation" of Real Madrid's assets, labeling it as an attempt to "steal" the club's heritage.
"The facts are clear and documented. Executives from Real Madrid have had access to a report by a 'Big Four' firm which certifies that all financial dealings with clubs have been completely transparent and market-compliant. If you chose not to participate under these terms, that is solely your issue," Tebas stated, defending the integrity of La Liga's financial operations.
