How Lionel Messi's Viral Photo With Baby Lamine Yamal Became a Football Icon Before 2026 World Cup Final
The famous image of Messi bathing Yamal has gone viral again ahead of the World Cup final.
As Argentina and Spain prepare to face off in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final, one iconic image has resurfaced across social media, captivating football fans around the globe. The photograph shows a young Lionel Messi holding and bathing a baby Lamine Yamal—a moment many believed for years had been edited or generated by artificial intelligence.
In reality, the photo is completely authentic. It was taken during a charity campaign that unexpectedly connected two football stars from different generations.

A Charity Photoshoot That Made History
The photograph was taken in December 2007 as part of a charity calendar organized by UNICEF and the FC Barcelona Foundation. As part of the initiative, several families won the opportunity to meet first-team Barcelona players through a raffle.
Lamine Yamal's family was among the winners and attended the photoshoot with the future Spain star, who was only a few months old at the time.
Photographer Joan Monfort captured the now-famous moment, with a 20-year-old Messi taking part as one of Barcelona's rising stars. At the time, the Argentine was beginning his ascent to global superstardom, while no one could have imagined the remarkable career awaiting the infant in his arms.

A Photo That Became a Football Icon
Over the years, the image took on an entirely new meaning as Lamine Yamal emerged as one of football's brightest young talents. Once his identity became widely known, the photograph quickly went viral, becoming one of the sport's most recognizable images.
Yamal later revealed that he was unaware of the photo for many years and only learned its story through his father.
What began as a charitable initiative has since become a symbolic link between two generations of footballers—one an all-time great, the other one of the game's brightest new stars. Nearly two decades later, Messi and Yamal are set to share the biggest stage in world football as Argentina and Spain meet in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final.
