The Team that Could Have Changed Barcelona's History: They Almost Signed Guardiola and Messi!
As always when he gives an interview, the president of Getafe, Ángel Torres, leaves no one indifferent. This time, he spoke on the microphones of the program 'El Partidazo de COPE', where among many other things, he revealed that he was close to signing Pep Guardiola and Leo Messi for the 'azulón' team in 2008.
Getafe's President, Ángel Torres, disclosed that he once came close to changing the course of FC Barcelona's history with the "failed" attempt to sign both Pep Guardiola and Lionel Messi for his team in 2008.
"We were in Europe, we went to the draw, and Txiki was there, who told me they were considering Laudrup to manage Barça, and I said I would talk to Guardiola. We agreed to meet one morning in the VIP lounge at the airport, but everything rushed, Rijkaard was sacked, and instead of Laudrup, they chose Guardiola. He was willing to come to Getafe. I also asked Laporta for Messi. I met with Laporta and Zubizarreta, and they said Rijkaard would give him minutes; but we were close. It was just missing a little. Alfredo Duro was with me as sporting director. It was August 18," were Torres' words for El Partidazo de COPE.
Furthermore, the same club president revealed that he owns "at least 10 Messi jerseys" because the Argentine footballer always sent them to him as he knew of the admiration he held for him.
On another note, Ángel Torres was asked about his relationship with other La Liga presidents, revealing that he gets along best with Florentino, Laporta, and Cerezo, although regarding Laporta, he disclosed that he "suffers a lot", which is logical because, unlike himself, Barcelona is a "big team".
