Why Bellingham Is Not Playing Against Real Betis
Real Madrid faces Real Betis for a La Liga match on Saturday, but star Jude Bellingham will not play.
Real Madrid will face Real Betis on March 1, 2025, without one of their most influential players, Jude Bellingham. The English midfielder is serving the second and final match of his suspension after receiving a red card in a 2-2 draw against Osasuna.
The incident that led to his suspension occurred in stoppage time against Osasuna on February 17. Bellingham scored what he thought was a goal in the last seconds of the match, only for the referee to disallow it due to an alleged foul in the build-up.
Bellingham promptly protested the referee’s call. The official responded by showing him a straight red card for dissent. The confrontation resulted in a suspension for two domestic matches, with him still being allowed to play for matches outside of La Liga.
Real Madrid’s appeal to overturn the decision was unsuccessful, forcing Bellingham to miss two crucial La Liga matches, including the upcoming clash against Real Betis.
Ancelotti’s Reaction to Bellingham’s Suspension
Manager Carlo Ancelotti has publicly defended Bellingham, expressing his frustration with the suspension. He described the red card as “an injustice” and suggested that the decision was overly harsh.
When asked about the recent overturning of Real Betis player Antony’s red card—who, like Bellingham, would have been suspended—Ancelotti refused to comment.
Despite Ancelotti’s criticism, the club was unable to reduce the ban, meaning Bellingham will complete his suspension against Real Betis before being eligible to return for Real Madrid’s next La Liga match against Rayo Vallecano on March 9.
Bellingham's Absence and Real Madrid’s Adjustments
Bellingham and Valverde, whom Ancelotti also confirmed will not be available for the upcoming match, are sidelined. Real Madrid will now welcome back Kylian Mbappé, who has recovered from recent dental issues and is fit to play.
Mbappé’s return will be a boost for Los Blancos as they aim to extend their lead in La Liga and build momentum ahead of the Champions League knockout stages. As Madrid prepares for the Betis clash, the team must prove its squad depth by securing a strong result despite notable absences.
