Bournemouth 0-2 Liverpool: Salah brace opens nine-point gap at the summit
Mohamed Salah scored twice as Liverpool saw off plucky Bournemouth to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table on Saturday.
Liverpool moved nine points clear at the top of the Premier League as Mohamed Salah scored both goals in their hard-fought 2-0 victory at Bournemouth.
Salah converted a penalty after Lewis Cook tripped Cody Gakpo in the first half, then bent a wonderful finish into the far corner to make the points safe with 15 minutes to play.
Bournemouth entered Saturday's game unbeaten in 11 Premier League outings while Liverpool had gone 18 without losing, and the Cherries made the leaders work for their win.
Antoine Semenyo rattled the near post with a ferocious drive in the 21st minute, and Liverpool went ahead nine minutes later, Salah keeping his cool after a long VAR check that followed Cook's trip on Gakpo.
Semenyo was then denied by Alisson as Bournemouth continued to press in the second half, but it was Justin Kluivert that missed their best chance, somehow skewing wide of an open goal after Marcus Tavernier's shot bounced off the upright.
Salah punished that miss with a curling finish from the right side of the area, sealing Liverpool's third straight league win and dealing Bournemouth their first loss since November.
Liverpool added to their advantage over Arsenal – who face Manchester City on Sunday – and Nottingham Forest, while Bournemouth stay seventh on 40 points.
Data Debrief: Salah passes 300-goal landmark
Salah's double took him to 25 goals in all competitions this season, with 21 of those coming in the Premier League.
He has now surpassed the 20-goal mark in five different Premier League campaigns, with only Alan Shearer (seven), Sergio Aguero and Harry Kane (both six) doing so on more occasions.
The Egyptian's strikes were also the 300th and 301st of his European club career in all competitions, with 236 of those coming for Liverpool (20 for Basel, two for Chelsea, nine for Fiorentina and 34 for Roma).
He now boasts 11 Premier League goals versus Bournemouth, the seventh side he has scored 10 or more times against in the competition. Only Shearer (12) has netted double figures against more different opponents in Premier League history.
