'The story of our season' - Robinson hails impact of Fulham substitutes
Rodrigo Muniz scored his second winner as a substitute this season as Fulham edged Newcastle United 2-1 at St James' Park on Saturday.
Fulham captain Antonee Robinson hailed the impact substitutes are having at the club this season after the Cottagers posted a 2-1 win at Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday.
Rodrigo Muniz turned home a free-kick from fellow substitute Andreas Pereira in the 82nd minute to give Marco Silva's side their first away in Newcastle in nearly 16 years and their third league double over the Magpies.
Raul Jimenez had cancelled out Jacob Murphy's first-half opener for Newcastle to move them up to ninth place.
"It's been the story of our season," said Robinson, who bagged the assist for Jimenez's equaliser, when asked about the impact the Fulham substitutes have had during the campaign.
"It's not just the starting 11, it's the whole squad fighting for places. The fact everyone keeps the belief and there's so much contribution from the bench just shows we're together as a unit and working for each other."
Robinson's assist was his 10th of the season, the joint-most of any Fulham player in a single campaign, moving level with Steed Malbranque (10 in 2003-04).
Muniz's goal was his second winner as a substitute this season, with only Jhon Duran netting more (three times) as a substitute.
Meanwhile, only Bournemouth (four) have more match-winning goals scored by substitutes this season than Fulham (three).
Hosts Newcastle were on the front foot throughout the first half at St James' Park, but Fulham came out a different outfit after the break and took the game to their opponents.
"I think we had some lack of objectiveness in the first half and did not have enough bodies in the box - that was one of the clear messages," Fulham boss Silva said.
"I thought we were losing too many individual duels in the first half. And also to keep doing the good things we did in the first half. We did it in a good way. We were more brave in our attack and able to score."
Fulham have now won three of their last five league games when behind at half-time - more than in their previous 88 such matches (W2 D10 L76).
Meanwhile, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe will be concerned by his side's poor home run. It was their second straight defeat on home soil, having also lost to Bournemouth 4-1 last month.
They are now set to host Arsenal in the second leg of the EFL Cup semi-finals, carrying a 2-0 advantage from the first leg in London.
"I think the whole atmosphere and feeling will be very different on Wednesday night," Howe looked forward to the last-four tie.
"But it's another reminder that we need to be near our best to win games, and it's another example of the quality of Premier League teams.
"We just have to hold our hands up and say we didn't perform today. Athletically, we weren't ourselves. All these things contribute to a disappointing day."
Howe's Newcastle will face champions Manchester City, Nottingham Forest and leaders Liverpool in their next three league outings.
