Who is Diana Flores? The Mexican Captain of the Detroit Lions
The Detroit Lions announced that Mexican flag football star Diana Flores will be their honorary captain for their Week 2 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2024 NFL season.
"We're thrilled to welcome Diana Flores, the NFL's Global Flag Football Ambassador, as our honorary captain this Sunday as we celebrate Women in Football," the Lions shared on social media.
Diana Flores is the captain of Mexico's flag football team, which won the gold at the World Games 2022 and earned a silver medal at the World Championship held in Lahti, Finland, last August, where Mexico lost the final to the United States.
In 2022, Flores was named the "NFL Global Ambassador," a role in which she promotes the international growth of the league and flag football, a sport set to be part of the Olympic program at the 2028 Los Angeles Games. Flores has been at the forefront of several NFL campaigns, including the commercial she starred in during Super Bowl LVII in 2023 alongside numerous NFL stars.
That ad aimed to deliver the message: "To the women driving football forward, we can’t wait to see where you take the game." At the end of the 2022 season, Diana Flores became the first Mexican to participate in the Pro Bowl. She served as the offensive coordinator for the American Conference team, with NFL legend Peyton Manning as head coach.
On September 4th, Flores also featured in Gatorade's latest ad campaign alongside NFL stars Lamar Jackson, Justin Jefferson, and Puka Nacua.
