Nadia Comaneci Outraged Over Incident at Paris 2024
Legendary gymnast Nadia Comaneci expressed her indignation over an incident that occurred this Monday in the floor final of the Paris Olympics, which led Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu to celebrate a bronze medal she ultimately did not win.
"I can't believe we are playing with athletes' mental health and emotions like this. We must protect them," Comaneci commented on a video showing Barbosu first waving her country's flag and then crying inconsolably.
Barbosu had initially secured the third-best score in the floor final (13.700), thus the bronze medal, behind Brazilian Rebeca Andrade (14.166) and American Simone Biles (14.133).
However, Jordan Chiles, the other American finalist, filed an appeal against her original score of 13.666, which had placed her in fifth position. The judges accepted her appeal and awarded her a revised score of 13.766, moving her up two positions. Barbosu was left off the podium.
While judges review appeals, a notification appears on the scoreboard indicating which score is under review. However, Barbosu was unaware of this.
Barbosu dropped her flag when she saw Chiles' new score, looked around in disbelief, and began to cry after her coaches confirmed the bad news.
