Which Country Topped the Paris 2024 Olympic Medal Table?
The victories of Jennifer Valente in track cycling's omnium and the U.S. women's basketball team secured the United States' position at the top of the Paris 2024 Olympic medal table, despite tying with China at 40 gold medals.
The U.S. and Chinese delegations battled until the final day for the top spot in the medal standings. The Americans ultimately claimed first place due to the overall quality of their other medals. The United States concluded the Games with 40 gold, 44 silver, and 42 bronze medals. China, which had briefly led on the last day, finished second with a final tally of 40 gold, 27 silver, and 24 bronze medals, marking the second consecutive Olympics in which China placed second. Beijing 2008 remains the only edition where China outpaced the United States.
In past Games, the U.S. dominated the medal tables in London 2012 with 48 golds, Rio 2016 with 46 golds, and narrowly edged out China in Tokyo 2020 with 39 to 38 golds.
The United States topped the medal counts in artistic gymnastics, athletics, swimming, and basketball, and shared the lead in football and golf. China led in sports such as artistic swimming, badminton, BMX freestyle, diving, shooting, tennis, table tennis, and weightlifting, while also tying for the lead in rhythmic gymnastics.
Japan rounded out the top three with 20 golds, 12 silvers, and 13 bronzes, followed by Australia (18-19-16) and host nation France (16-26-22).
The United States also led in the total number of medals, securing 126, followed by China with 91, Great Britain with 65, and France with 64.
