Memphis Depay aims for the impossible with Corinthians against Barcelona in Libertadores
Memphis Depay and Corinthians face an almost impossible task this Tuesday: overturning a three-goal deficit against Barcelona, the top team in Ecuador, to reach the Copa Libertadores group stage—all while dealing with several key players struggling with injuries. The match kicks off on Tuesday, March 12, at 8:20 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on beIN SPORTS USA.
The Brazilian side needs to win by at least four goals to stay alive in South America's biggest tournament. A three-goal victory would send the tie to a penalty shootout. The 3-0 defeat in Guayaquil left Corinthians with slim chances, especially after their exhausting battle on Sunday to qualify for the Campeonato Paulista final with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Santos, where Neymar made an appearance. On top of that, Argentine coach Ramón Díaz saw several of his key players finish that match with physical discomfort.
Hope rests on Depay, Yuri Alberto, and Garro
Their top striker, Yuri Alberto, picked up a heavy knock on his ankle but is still expected to start at the Neo Química Arena. Meanwhile, Argentine midfielder Rodrigo Garro, a key piece in the squad, has been dealing with persistent knee pain since the start of the season.
"I'm doing everything I can to be 100% fit, to not miss any games, and to be available, but unfortunately, the pain is still there," Garro admitted after the match against Santos. Yuri Alberto and Garro were the goal scorers in Sunday's win and will be crucial in attack alongside Depay. The Dutch forward is in solid form—so far this year, the former Barcelona and Atlético de Madrid player has scored two goals and provided six assists in 13 matches.
Barcelona holds the advantage but faces some doubts
On the other side, Barcelona arrives in São Paulo looking to finish the job after their surprising 3-0 win in the first leg. Leading the Ecuadorian squad is striker Felipe Caicedo, who made his Libertadores debut in that match after spending most of his career abroad.
However, the team managed by Segundo Alejandro Castillo suffered a major setback over the weekend, losing 4-0 to Independiente del Valle in the Liga Pro de Ecuador. In that game, the coach rested several starters and had to deal with an early red card for midfielder Jhonny Quiñónez.
For the clash against Corinthians, center-back Álex Rangel is ruled out due to injury, meaning Argentine Gastón Campi and Ecuadorian Xavier Arreaga are the likely candidates to replace him. Despite the loss, Barcelona remains top of the Ecuadorian league with nine points, one ahead of LDU de Quito and Macará. The match kicks off on Tuesday, March 12, at 8:20 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on beIN SPORTS USA.
