(VIDEO) Racing Club Claims Their First Copa Sudamericana Title
Racing Club has secured its first-ever Copa Sudamericana, giving Argentina its 10th title in the tournament's history, solidifying its position as the most successful country in the competition.
Under the leadership of Gustavo Costas, Racing triumphed with a 3-1 victory in the final held in Asunción, Paraguay, against Brazilian side Cruzeiro. Like Racing, Cruzeiro was also chasing its first Copa Sudamericana, hoping to secure Brazil's sixth title in the tournament.
Brazil remains second in the all-time Copa Sudamericana rankings with titles from Athletico Paranaense (2), Internacional, São Paulo, and Chapecoense.
Racing now takes the throne previously held by Ecuadorian club Liga de Quito, who won the 2023 title against Brazil's Fortaleza. Ecuador has claimed four Copa Sudamericana trophies in total, shared equally between Independiente del Valle (2) and Liga de Quito (2).
The list of champions also includes clubs with one title each: Cienciano from Peru, Pachuca from Mexico, Universidad de Chile, and Independiente Santa Fe from Colombia.
Interestingly, teams from Venezuela, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Uruguay have yet to win this competition. The closest was Bolívar of Bolivia, who finished as runners-up in 2004 when Boca Juniors lifted the trophy.
