Juan Fer Quintero: A Historic Libertadores and Sudamericana Double
Colombian playmaker Juan Fernando Quintero, the mastermind behind Racing Club’s Copa Sudamericana triumph, added another prestigious milestone to his illustrious career. On Saturday, he secured his second continental trophy, having previously lifted the Copa Libertadores in 2018 with River Plate.
Quintero’s achievement cements his status as one of South America’s top footballing talents, joining an elite group of players who have conquered both of the region’s most coveted competitions. The Colombian was instrumental in Racing’s success, shining in the 3-1 final victory over Cruzeiro in Asunción and throughout the tournament. While he didn’t score in the final, his contributions in the semifinals were pivotal. Quintero netted twice in a tense second-leg clash against Corinthians, leading Racing to a 2-1 win and securing their spot in the final with a 4-3 aggregate result.
This wasn’t the first time Quintero played a key role in a continental championship. During River Plate’s legendary Copa Libertadores campaign in 2018, Quintero delivered one of the most iconic goals in South American football history—a stunning long-range strike in Madrid’s final against Boca Juniors. That goal not only sealed victory over River’s eternal rivals but also immortalized Quintero as a club legend.
Now at 31, Quintero has once again etched his name into the hearts of Argentine football fans, proving that his brilliance thrives on the continent’s biggest stages.
