Jan Oblak Wants to Win More with Atlético Madrid
In an interview with Mundo Deportivo, the Slovenian goalkeeper said he feels good at Atlético Madrid and hopes to help the team win the trophies that are still missing.
He is one of the pillars of Atlético Madrid, to the point that one might wonder if he has always been there, guarding the goal for the team. At 31 years old, Jan Oblak has held his position for 10 years since joining from Benfica. Over the past decade, he has established himself as a reference not only in La Liga but also in Europe and the world, showcasing formidable consistency.
This season, the Slovenian continues to shine, commanding the tightest defense in La Liga. After 15 matches, he has only had to pick the ball out of his net eight times. "It's always good to concede few goals," he told Mundo Deportivo. This solidity has recently been coupled with excellent offensive efficiency. After a shaky start to the season, Diego Simeone seems to have found the right approach to unlock his team's full potential. The result: the rojiblancos have now won six consecutive matches in all competitions, including a commanding 5-0 victory over Real Valladolid last weekend. "We are always looking for a moment like the one we are living now, moments of victory, but it's not always like that. We must keep going like this, keep going, and not stop because there's still a long road ahead, and I hope we stay in this moment throughout the season," said Oblak.
"I Represent a Great Team"
With the experience of the last few seasons, the native of Škofja Loka remains cautious and emphasizes the need to maintain the level of excellence that has led to their current results, as the goal is not just to perform well in the fall but to sustain it throughout the season to fight for titles in the spring. In early October, it was he who stepped up to put his teammates back on track after a disastrous 0-4 loss in the Champions League against Benfica. A wake-up call that proved effective.
More mature, Oblak knows he's in his prime years and wants to make the most of them for the benefit of Atlético Madrid. "I'm very proud because I represent a great team. Over these ten years, I've experienced many beautiful moments. I don't think too much about the past because I still have a few good years left at the highest level. I look toward the future. I've always said that as long as I'm here, I will give my best for this club and try to win as much as possible... I'll give everything I have to help the club and try to win the titles I've never won," he confided in the same interview with the Catalan sports newspaper.
Having already won La Liga (2021), two Spanish Super Cups (2014 and 2018), and a Europa League (2018), the Slovenian is now targeting the Copa del Rey and, of course, the Champions League, a competition in which he played in the final in 2014 (losing in a penalty shootout to Real Madrid). Two titles he aims to add to his collection, hopefully, this year. Given the recent form of Atlético Madrid, the potential is there; now it’s about making it a reality.
