Pau Cubarsí faces a tough decision ahead of Barcelona's next match against Real Sociedad. After sustaining a deep cut to his face in the recent Champions League clash with Red Star, the 17-year-old central defender received ten stitches and has a noticeable swelling that could jeopardize his participation. However, Cubarsí remains determined to play, and Barça’s medical team has considered the possibility of him using a protective mask. 

During a consultation at the Teknon clinic, specialists examined mask options that would offer him protection without compromising his field of vision or worsening the swelling. For Cubarsí, the mask represents a chance to be on the field supporting his team, even though his wound is still fresh and any impact could reopen it. His commitment is evident: “All for this badge,” he posted on social media, sharing the phrase along with an image of his injury.

Head coach Hansi Flick, however, is cautious about Cubarsí’s early return. With several center-backs injured, including Ronald Araújo and Andreas Christensen, Flick faces a dilemma: risking a key player’s health or opting for less experienced alternatives like Sergi Domínguez.

Although the possibility of Cubarsí playing with some form of protection hasn’t been completely ruled out, club specialists prefer to avoid it if there’s no bone risk. Upcoming training sessions will determine whether the wound continues to heal well and if he will be cleared to travel to San Sebastián for Sunday’s match. 

Cubarsí wouldn’t be the first Barça player to wear a protective mask.
