Lille Deal Another Blow to Lyon with Defeat in Ligue 1
Lyon continue to struggle after suffering another defeat, sinking to the bottom of Ligue 1 following a 0-2 loss to Lille at the Groupama Stadium in the completion of the thirteenth matchday.
There seemed to be an improvement in the team now under the guidance of Fabio Grosso, the third coach this season, after drawing with Metz two matches ago. In their last game before the break, they secured their first win of the season against Stade Rennes.
However, they were outclassed by a more formidable opponent with ambitions for the Champions League. Canadian Jonathan David opened the scoring for Lille in the fifteenth minute after receiving a pass from Turkish Yusuf Yazici. Just past the half-hour mark, Paulo Fonseca's team extended the lead with a stunning goal from Portuguese Tiago Santos, who unleashed a powerful shot from twenty meters that caught Anthony Lopes off guard.
The victory places Lille fourth in the standings, one point behind third-placed Monaco and six behind second-placed Nice. They are seven points adrift of the leaders, Paris Saint-Germain.
Lyon finds themselves at the bottom, with salvation five points away.
