What We Know About Gerardo Martino’s Reported Resignation from Messi’s Inter Miami
Just 10 days after Inter Miami’s elimination, multiple outlets revealed that Gerardo Martino had decided to step down as the team’s head coach—a decision that surprised many, especially given the high expectations surrounding the team due to Lionel Messi’s presence.
"Tata" Steps Away for Personal Reasons
According to journalist Tom Bogert, Martino resigned for "personal reasons," marking the end of his third stint coaching Messi after working with him in the Argentina national team, Barcelona, and now Major League Soccer.
What Was Messi Doing as the News Broke?
At the time of the announcement, Messi was with the Argentina national team, preparing for their final match of the year, following Inter Miami’s playoff elimination by Atlanta United, Martino’s former club.
While no official communication between Martino and Messi has been disclosed, it’s likely the two have spoken, given Messi’s influence within Inter Miami.
A Press Conference Raises Questions
Inter Miami scheduled a press conference for Friday at 10:30 AM ET, where Martino is set to appear alongside club owner Jorge Mas and president of soccer operations Raül Sanllehí. The event has fueled speculation about the reasons behind Martino’s departure.
Martino and Messi's Titles Together
During Martino’s tenure, Inter Miami claimed the 2024 MLS Supporters’ Shield, setting a league record with 74 points, and won the Leagues Cup in 2023. Martino joined the team midway through the 2023 season, coinciding with the arrivals of Messi, Jordi Alba, and Sergio Busquets, all former Barcelona stars.
