Mbappé Struggles to Shine at Real Madrid, Missed Champions League Penalty Says It All
Kylian Mbappé missed a crucial opportunity, continues to underperform, and could be said to have not yet taken off with Real Madrid. In the moment when the team needed him most to step up, he failed in his attempt to be the hero during their visit to Anfield.
With Vinícius Jr. sidelined due to injury, it was the perfect chance for the Frenchman to take the lead, but Liverpool had other plans. In a tough away match, Carlo Ancelotti's side suffered a 2-0 defeat, with Mbappé’s miss raising questions about his tenure with Los Blancos.
Mbappé’s Missed Penalty
In the 61st minute, the French forward took responsibility for a penalty kick, aiming to the right, but his attempt was saved. This allowed Liverpool to maintain their one-goal advantage at that stage of the match.
This marks Mbappé’s second missed penalty in the Champions League, following a similar miss against RB Leipzig in October 2021.
Mbappé’s Struggles in the Champions League for Real Madrid
The former PSG player continues to face criticism for his lack of efficiency in front of goal, and the numbers don’t lie: he has scored just one goal in five Champions League matches for Real Madrid this season. While he has managed nine goals across all competitions, much more was expected of him.
Vinícius Jr., on the other hand, remains the top scorer for Ancelotti’s team with 12 goals this season, four of which have come in the Champions League.
