This is How the NFL World Responded to the Shooting at the Super Bowl Parade in Kansas City
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs requested prayers for the victims of the shooting that occurred at the end of the victory parade earlier in Kansas City, Missouri.
"Praying for Kansas City," the quarterback posted on his X account hours after the incident.
As is customary after winning a title, the Chiefs paraded through the streets of Kansas City in front of thousands of fans who cheered them on for winning Super Bowl LVIII last Sunday.
At the end of the parade, team owner Clark Hunt, coach Andy Reid, and the players thanked the fans for their support in winning their fourth Vince Lombardi Trophy in team history.
Minutes after the event ended, a shooting broke out a few meters from the celebration area, in which, according to local Police Department Chief Stacey Graves, one person died and between 10 and 15 were injured.
"We are saddened by the senseless act of violence that occurred at the conclusion of today's parade. Our hearts are with the victims, their families, and all of Kansas City," the Kansas City Chiefs wrote in a statement.
Several of Mahomes' teammates joined in requesting prayers for the victims.
Linebacker Drue Tranquill wrote a message of solidarity on his social media.
"Please join me in prayer for all the victims in this heinous act. Prayers for steady hands for the doctors and responders, and for everyone to experience full healing," Tranquill wrote.
Tackle Donovan Smith, linebacker Justin Reid, and cornerback Trent McDuffie were among others who used their platforms to lament what happened.
"Get the hate out y’all hearts!! Praying for the Kingdom," McDuffie wrote.
Offensive lineman Trey Smith highlighted the quick action of responders towards the victims.
"My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by today's incidents. Huge thanks to the responders who ran towards the sound of danger. You're the ones who should be celebrated," Smith emphasized.
The Baltimore Ravens and the Denver Broncos also expressed their dismay at what happened.
"Our hearts are with 'Chiefs Kingdom' after the tragic events and shocking violence that occurred during the parade in Kansas City," lamented the Ravens and Broncos in a joint statement.
