Former Paralympic Star Oscar Pistorius Released from Prison
The South African athlete Oscar Pistorius, convicted of the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in late 2017, has been released from prison and placed on parole under the orders of South African authorities this Friday, January 5, 2024, and he is now at home.
Authorities provided little information about the parole of the former Paralympic athlete; however, it is known that the South African Department of Prisons announced on Friday morning that Pistorius would be on parole and would be released from the Atteridgeville Correctional Center in Pretoria.
Pistorius entered prison in 2013, the year he committed the murder of Reeva Steenkamp by firing multiple shots through a door in his house while she was behind it. This incident occurred on February 14 of that year. The South African athlete pleaded not guilty and denied murdering his girlfriend, claiming that he thought there was a burglar in his house when he fired.
The former Paralympic athlete, who shocked society with the murder of his girlfriend, left a lasting impression, as he was believed to be a great example of overcoming adversity after losing both legs at an early age and achieving impressive times in the 100, 200, and 400 meters.
