The Challenging Road Ahead for Barcelona in the Champions League
What's next for Barcelona in the Champions League? Barcelona is well-positioned to advance to the Round of 16, but the remaining three matches will not be easy.
After a tough start to the current Champions League campaign, FC Barcelona has rebounded spectacularly, correcting their early mistakes with a string of impressive victories. The team, managed by Hansi Flick, found themselves in a difficult situation after their 2-1 loss to Monaco in the opening match, where they played for 80 minutes with a man down due to Eric Garcia's red card.
However, Barcelona bounced back in style, securing four consecutive wins, including dominant victories over Young Boys (5-0), Bayern Munich (4-1), Red Star Belgrade (5-2), and Brest (3-0). These wins have propelled them to 12 points from 15, securing third place in their Champions League "League Phase" table, behind Liverpool (15 points) and Inter Milan (13 points).
With the top 8 teams advancing directly to the knockout rounds, Barcelona is well-positioned to secure a spot in the Round of 16. However, the remaining three fixtures in the group stage will be anything but easy. They will face Borussia Dortmund in Germany, Benfica in Portugal, and Atalanta at home in Barcelona.
A Grueling Final Stretch
The first of these tough fixtures is the trip to Borussia Dortmund. With Barcelona being the tournament's top scorer with 18 goals, Dortmund isn’t far behind with 16. Defensively, both teams are fairly comparable, with Barcelona having conceded 5 goals and Dortmund 6.
This match on December 11 is particularly significant as Dortmund, currently in fifth place in the Bundesliga, are always a formidable opponent in Europe. The game falls between important league matches against Betis (December 7) and Leganés (December 15), meaning Barcelona must stay focused as they look to secure their place in the knockout stage.
Benfica's Tough Challenge
Following Dortmund, Barcelona's next hurdle is Benfica in Lisbon on January 21, 2025. The Portuguese side, currently 14th in the Champions League League Phase with 9 points, has already proved its mettle by demolishing Atlético Madrid 4-0 and earning a 3-2 win over Monaco, the only team to beat Barcelona so far. A win here is crucial for Barcelona as they continue to chase a top spot in the group and a direct passage to the Round of 16. This fixture will be sandwiched between league matches against Getafe and Valencia.
The Final Test: Atalanta at Home
The final match of this phase will be against Atalanta in Barcelona on January 29, 2025. Gian Piero Gasperini's Atalanta is a team to watch, currently second in Serie A and in fifth place in the Champions League group with 11 points. This match promises to be a challenge, as Atalanta are always dangerous under Gasperini’s guidance. It will be Barcelona's last chance to secure a spot in the knockout round in front of their home crowd, after league matches against Valencia and Alavés.
A Season to Make Up for Past Disappointments
While Barcelona has been one of the most prolific teams in the Champions League this season, they cannot afford to underestimate the strength of their remaining opponents. With a new manager and a fresh sense of determination, the team aims to redeem itself after years of disappointments in Europe. A strong finish to this group stage will set Barcelona on the path to what they hope will be a much more successful Champions League campaign.
